Bright Spots

So I’ve been in Florida for the past five days.

Highs included grouper sandwiches, walks on the beach, fresh strawberry daiquiris, quality time with my parents, hanging out with Erica Ridley, Julie Leto, and Susan Kearney, kitty cats sleeping on my feet, and lemons as big as my head.

Lows included continual bad news about the economy that seems to affect everyone I know’s career, missing my husband and Rio, and a huge east coast snowstorm that got my flight canceled and prompted four hours of me being on hold with US Airways trying to get my flight changed.

I head home today.

And then I go to Ireland.

And in between then, you really don’t want to know what all is on my To-Do list, but suffice it to say, I don’t think there’s much SLEEP in my future.

However, a big bright spot in my day is this post by YA blogger Presenting Lenore, offering what might be my favorite review of Rampant to date. I really kinda want to copy and paste the entire thing. Writers live for the moments when readers seem to get what it was they were trying to do, and however much I love it when people read my books (which is already seas of love, let me tell you), I love it even more when their favorite parts are my favorite parts:

There are so many things to love about this book. Let’s start with the characters. There are a lot of them, but even the supporting players get distinctive enough personalities that you can tell them apart. There’s Astrid – the type of sarcastically hilarious, fiercely loyal girl you want as a best friend (and want on your side in the case of a killer unicorn apocalypse). There’s also her free-spirited and athletic cousin Philippa. And there are the couple of boys that become serious threats to their virginity and their powers. (Abstinence programs take note – this book makes a great case for keeping your virginity!)

I also loved that the book takes you on an emotional journey with Astrid. There are the highs of a successful hunt, a stolen kiss (ok, a lot of stolen kisses), and discovering the benefits of her powers. But there are also the lows of defeat, of discouragement, of wanting to give it all up.

One last thing I want to mention is how much I enjoyed the scenes with Bonegrinder, the small unicorn of the zhi variety that lives with the convent girls. She is as sweet as a kitten to virgins but gores anyone else. Every time she was around, I just wanted to cuddle my kitten even tighter.

I’m giddy all over again. And tempted to warn Lenore that it’s good she’s cuddling her kitten, since Bonegrinder would, you know, want to eat it.

The great news is that Lenore is giving away her ARC copy of Rampant. You can go to her blog and enter the giveaway. And stay tuned, becuase there might be some additional news about the giveaway. Um, later. Once I’m home.

Oh, one final note, since i’ve been getting emails: March’s secret story will be posted in the middle of the month, like all the secret stories.
