My New Mac (Updated x3)

So for the past week, I have been sans computer chez Diana. Talk about a pain. I’m still feeling it, since the change in technology in the past few years means that I am still unable to get my old files off my back up drives or my darling old broken Pantalaimon. They apparently use some totally new kind of firewire cable these days. And I can’t find my old MS Office disks, so I’m on Open Office for word processing now. But I do miss my excel.

(Note to self: never again name a computer after a daimon. It’s too creepy when it breaks.)

We had a good run of it, Pan and I. I’m kinda shocked, though, at how far things have come in the past 3.5 years. My new computer, which is not the fastest or the largest Mac makes by far, has about three times as much memory as my old computer and my old back up drive put together. And it’s way faster. And the keyboard/trackpad are all weird.

Anyway here it is:

Rio and Mac

Rio and my new MacBook

Sailor Boy and I spent a while brainstorming names for this beauty. Which is how we’ve arrived at the following contest:

Guess the Name of My New Computer!

Winner gets a signed copy of RAMPANT.

(If more than one person guesses the name of my new computer, the first correct guesser wins.)

Have at it!

Updated for HINTS: My last three computers were named: Arthur, Lancelot the Laptop, and Pantalaimon. As I said above, I will never name another computer after a daimon, so Kaisa is right out. I have also not, just for the sake of narrowing things down, named the computer any of the following: McNulty, Omar, Xander Harris, Prince Zuko, Logan Echolls, Tally Youngblood, Aslan, or Sokka.

Updated again: Though I should have named it Aang. Oh well. Maybe I’ll save that for my MacBookAir. Hee hee, I crack myself up. (Just kidding, I’m not getting a MacBookAir. Way too big for my netbook needs.)

The name of my computer is…. BUCEPHALUS

  1. My guess is Giovanni or Astrid. You didn’t clue in if it has a male personality or a female.

So you definitely think Apples are better for writing than the other?

  2. Ooh great contest. I’m guessing… Bonegrinder! 🙂
    Love the MacBook!

  3. Diana says:

I think Apples are better in general, Elie, and I’ve been using them throughout college (on the small newspaper I worked for) and when I worked for the independent weekly. It made sense to have an apple for personal use as well, and I’ve been a Mac girl on my personal computer since 2003. I had an ibook G3, an ibook G4, and now a MacBookPro.

Most small publishing and design operations (like local newspapers) use apples because the graphics/layout programs are great.

The OS and interface is what I’m used to, and it’s how all my backup files are organized as well. I’m a huge fan of iPhoto and the other packaged products in OSX. My Office (once I find it) is office for Mac. All my other programs are for-Mac programs as well.

Additionally (and this could be why almost every writer I know uses a Mac), Scrivener ONLY works for mac, and it’s my favorite word processing program.

    I can’t imagine switching.

  4. jpetroroy says:

    I’m guessing Gilbert.

  5. Sarah W. says:

    I guess Merlin the Mac-nificent.

Also, just gotta tell you that I loved Rampant. It is so hard to find unique storylines and I loved the evil unicorns! Brilliant darling, simply brilliant!

  6. Nessa says:

I am seriously considering making the jump from my Dell to a Mac. I drool every time I walk into Best Buy. 🙂

  7. Alexa says:

I’ll go for Lloyd but I’m really hoping it’s bonegrinder!

  8. Diana says:

    Sarah: Thank you so much!

    Nessa: Snerk.

  9. Chelsea DeTorres says:

I’m guessing Guinevere or some variation on that name since the first two were from King Arthur.
What happens if nobody guesses the name?

  10. Diana says:

Then I will keep my Rampant all to myself mwahahahahahha!

Um, I dunno. I’m pretty sure someone will guess. I’ll keep giving hints ’til someone does.

  11. Michelle says:

I wanted to guess Merlin, but someone beat me to it . . .

So as a second guess I will say . . . Alexander (for the MacBook, it is great!)

And can I express how deeply and desperately I envy you the beautiful shiny MacbBook pro? I LOOOOOOVE my eMac, we have been together for . . . 5? 6? 7? years now, and she is wonderful. But she is NOT portable. My next Mac will be a MacBook pro . . . but I might have to sell a kidney or something to finance it! LOL!

  12. Cat says:

    Hehehe.. GrannySmith?

(sorry, I HAD to toss in an apple-related guess!)

Why do we name our computers? What is that weird need that we all have to do this? My lap top (not a Mac) is named Molly. But then I think, Good heavens! Why did I name this? What is wrong with me??

  13. Diana says:

I name everything. my car is named Nikita. SB and I are still thinking of the right name for our house. Names are AWESOME.

  14. Sara says:

  15. Sara says:

Also, I’m completely in love with Logan Echolls! Perhaps I will name my computer that! 🙂

  16. Michelle says:

I name everything too. My little black car is named Lacrimosa, after a character in Terry Pratchett’s Carpe Jugulum. (Also a sort of famous song by a sort of famous composer but that wasn’t the inspiration.)

But strangely, I just call my computer “Mac”. Or, you know, wonderful beautiful one. Or some variation thereof.

I also hug my computer . . . is that weird?

  17. Mississippi Mama says:

I’d name a new laptop Poe, just to get a warm, fuzzy feeling every time I looked at it.

  18. Oh, what an awesome new computer, Diana! Well, it *is* silver, so in keeping with the theme, I’ll say: Excalibur. Or, maybe – Macalibur?

  19. Diana says:

Awww, Mississippi Mama, taht’s so sweet. Woudln’t you worry that a laptop named Poe would be surly and hide things from you?

  20. Patrick says:

Given your recent Dog Naming – “TempComputer 3”

    Or “Patrick”

I do not think you named it Patrick, but you probably should have. I am a reliable machine.

  21. Diana says:

Macalibur! I love it. Mary, you should work for Mac. They should name and OS that. IF they do and don’t compensate you, you should charge.

Y’all are on the wrong track with Arthur-related titles. I already gave TWO computers Arthur-related stories. Then I moved on to His Dark Materials.

  22. Lisa S. says:

I name everything too! I have a recliner named McDuff and my car is named Knightley because he’s perfect and black (not that Emma’s Mr. Knightley is black but because of night, anyway, whatever).

All the names I thought of were taken so I thought of some more. I’m going to say, Bucephalus or Clothilde. I see those being good computer names.

  23. Diana says:

    and we have a winner!

  24. Sara says:

    Lord Asriel or Asriel
    Iorek Byrnison
There are lots of good names in the His Dark Materials books… did you pick your new name from them like the last one?

Also, it would be cool to name the computer The Authority… 🙂

  25. Diana says:

Sara, Iorek was my second choice.

  26. PurpleRanger says:

Even though it’s too late, I probably would have said Bonegrinder. Maybe Bugaboo.

My own laptop is Riddler. When I was setting it up, and I came to the window that asked for “Organization,” I typed in “United Network for the Command of Law Enforcement.”

  27. Virginia says:

Diana, I definitely got a good chuckle from the idea of naming a MacBookAir Aang =)
