Teen Diana, Witches, and Giveaway

Today on Genreality I write a letter to my 13 year old self, who promptly faints dead away upon receipt. Because…. wow. Just go read it. It’s pertinent to our discussion.

Which is… it’s only a few days until the release of UNDER MY HAT: TALES FROM THE CAULDRON (in the U.S., anyway). You guys. You guys. This anthology is SOOOOOOO good. I know I always say that, but I can’t stop thinking about these stories. I just think about them all day long. I am bewitched. Ensorcelled.

Witches, man. Witches.

And since I got a few extra copies in the mail today, I thought I’d spread the enchantment and hold a little giveaway. All you have to do is leave a comment here, telling me your favorite witch from page, stage, or screen (or folklore. Any witch goes).

Goes through this weekend. Open internationally.

  1. Caitlin says:

Witches are my THING. You know the way some people will ALWAYS read a vampire book, even if they know it’s going to be horrible. I will ALWAYS read a Witch book.

How can I choose just ONE?!?!

I mean…I guess….uh…well, there’s Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle. Thais from the Balefire series be Cate Tiernan. Tamsin from Once a Witch/Always a Witch by Carolyn MacCullough.

And…oh, so many more. I should just stop here though.

  2. Jenni says:

I’ve been revisiting Terry Pratchett recently, so Tiffany Aching and Granny Weatherwax are my current favorites.

  3. Beth says:

I’m going to be totally unoriginal and say Hermione. But she really is my favourite witch. As with all Rowling’s characters she’s so fully fleshed out. She has plenty of negative traits but you love her anyway, because along with the being a smug know-it-all, she’s also strong and brave and loyal.

But you guys know all this, of course!

  4. Amy W says:

Gillian Holroyd from Bell Book & Candle pops in my mind immediately, both how she bewitches and befuddles Jimmy Stewart, but also because she has such a great cat in Pyewacket.

But how can I not love McGonagall from the HP series? An original bada$$ that woman.

  5. That sounds so good. Can I enter, I live in Australia.

My favourite is probably Mildred Hubble from The Worst Witch which I had as a kid, or another childhood favourite, or Belladonna from Which Witch by Iva Ibbotson, a white witch who desperately wants to be bad, but just can’t!

    • Diana says:

Oh man, Mildred Hubble! I love her. In fact, I refused to read HP for like, years, out of misplaced loyalty to Mildred and her witch school.

Yes, you can enter. Open internationally means just that.

  6. Alyssa Susanna says:

I’m not a huge fan of witches, but one that I particurlary like is Freya from Bloody Valentine and Witches of East by Melissa de la Cruz. She healed Oliver! I thought that was nice, because otherwise he’d be stuck for the rest of his life.

Congrats and thanks for the giveaway!!!!

  7. Mike G. says:

Jaelithe from Andre Norton’s Witch World. She was a strong character who followed her heart to be with the man she loved, knowing that she might lose her ability to use her powers.

  8. Ashley says:

My first thought was Elphaba from Wicked. And then Hermione, because, c’mon, it’s Hermione. I also have a massive girl-crush on Luna Lovegood.

Congrats on the anthology, and thanks for the giveaway. =)

  9. Alli says:

Willow from Buffy, hands down my favorite.

Definitely going to check out this anthology one way or another. Congrats! 🙂

  10. Serena says:

It took me a while to pick a favourtie, but in the end I decided on Willow from Buffy. 😀
Coming in a close second is Bonnie from The Vampire Diaries. (the book not the show.)

  12. Emily says:

Wow, so many good answers! I have to second (or third?) Willow Rosenberg! Prof. McGonagall is an awesome witch, too.

  13. Justine says:

My pick is Briony from Chime by Franny Billingsley. I want everybody to read that book!

    • AmyW says:

Briony is such a good answer. And I’ve done the same, tried to convince everyone to read it. 🙂

  14. Alexa says:

Thirteen year old me – Mildred Hubble from The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy.

Now me – Elphaba and Glinda from Wicked. Purely based on the musical, I haven’t read the book.

  15. PurpleRanger says:

After giving it some thought, I guess I would have to say Sabrina The Teenage Witch — more the version from the comics than Melissa Joan Hart.

  16. Alexandra the Great says:

Due to my former teenage obsession with Mists of Avalon and my continuing interest in Arthurian legends and adaptations, I would have to say Morgan le Faye.

  17. wade2121 says:

    Hermione from Harry Potter.

  18. Andrea says:

Without a doubt, Elphaba and Glenda from Wicked!!

  19. Mihaela says:

I am very partial to Nanny Ogg. Very.

  20. Sarah says:

Oh man, how can I ever pick just one?

For good witches, I’m going to have to say either Hermoine, Professor McGonagall, or Louise from Teen Witch (the ridiculous 80s movie, of course).

For villainous witches, I’d have to say the Grand High Witch (from The Witches by Roald Dahl) or the lovely ladies of Hocus Pocus (yes, the Disney movie).

Your tweets have me very excited for this book!

  21. Angie says:

I have to say that I really loved Sabrina from Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Elphaba from Wicked. They’re all so spunky and independent witches.

  22. Elspeth says:

I think Tara, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I love Willow too, but I think if we’re going to be talking about witches, then I’m going to choose Tara.

Of course, I do remember being a very big fan of Sabrina Spellman when I was younger… hm…

  23. Shanelle says:

I’m a little biased but I’ve got to say First Witch from Macbeth. I played that role in a school play and had so much fun with it. I do love Glinda/Elphaba though, as well, like a couple other commenters. 🙂

  24. Michelle says:

I have to go with Willow from BtVS. Oh! And and the Owens ladies from Practical Magic 🙂

Super excited for this anthology! The cover is gorgeous!

  25. Rachel says:

Today my favourite witch is Kiki, (of Kiki’s Delivery Service) and her cat Jiji.
My daughter says Hermione is her favourite.

  26. Melanie Stang says:

I agree with one of the previous posts and would pick Willow from Buffy, though I kind of like the show Charmed as well. Awesome contest!

  27. Thoraiya says:

Thought I might be the first to say Morgaine from Mists of Avalon…TOO SLOW

Equal favourite witch is McGonagall from Harry Potter…WAYYY TOO SLOW

Let’s see how good my witch powers are.

  28. Ileana A. says:

My favorite is Hermione from Harry Potter!! Thank you so much for the chance!

  29. Tanya says:

Willow from Buffy for tv version and of course Diana tregarde from Mercedes lackey.

  30. Tiff says:

Ginny Weasley has always been my favorite character in Harry Potter – I know we don\’t get to see her do magic that often, but maybe I love her for all the non-witchy things about her? Anyway. Definitely my favorite witch. I always wished that we\’d gotten a bit more about her in the books, she seems like a lot of fun.

  31. Virginia says:

As the kid that wasn’t allowed to watch/read things with witches in them (with the exception of Narnia and Tolkien) when I was a kid, I have to say my favorite evil witch is Maleficent from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty (she still intimidates me when I watch it!). And my favorite good witches are Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Paige was okay, but was no replacement for Prua) from Charmed. They made me so glad that I have the bond with my sister that I have. I also felt like such the bad@$$ when I started watching that show in college. I am proof that if you put the fear of Mom and God into kids young enough they will think that watching Charmed is rebellious. 🙂

Please don’t count me in the contest. Amazon says I’ll be receiving my copy of Under My Hat (as well as Foretold) come September 5th.

  32. Kim m says:

I like Bonnie from The Vampire Diaries. She is praetty cool.

  33. Jessica T. says:

I have always loved Eglantine Price from Bedknobs and Broomsticks (okay… after thinking about that end scene with the empty armor army — I feel like watching that movie right now… ).

Anyway… I also like Willow from TV Buffy and most recently, Diana Bishop from “A Discovery of Witches”
